Singer & Multi-instrumentalist

A musical journey across genres and continents

Growing up in a home filled with instruments, Sousou developed a natural and curious love for music.

Her voice has always been her primary instrument – expressive, soulful and grounded – but her musical curiosity led her to explore melodies on any instrument that came her way.

Over the years, she has learned to play the kora, guitar, piano, recorders, flutes, and has also explored violin, balalaika, and other instruments from different traditions and corners of the world.

Her formal musical education began with classical piano, violin, recorder, and choir singing as a child, and continued through many years of study in both Sweden and Senegal. She has a strong foundation in classical and early music – with a focus on choir repertoire, medieval, renaissance and baroque music – and an equally strong love for pop, soul, Swedish folk, and West African traditions.

Sousou has studied with a wide range of inspiring teachers. Her vocal coaches include Kishti TomitaMatilda LindellAdama CissokhoMatou Diabate, and Mariama Saho. She studied piano with Håkan Carlsson, and recorder with Anna Carin FogelqvistPia Loman, and Göran Karlsson. She has also studied Swedish folk singing with Maria RöjåsAnders Larsson, and Zara Tellander, and sung in choirs led by Eva Bohlin and Lena Ekman Frisk.

Her kora teachers – Alagi MbyeSolo Cissokho, and Toumani Diabaté – have all generously invited her to study directly with them, opening doors into the rich oral and instrumental traditions of the griots.

And of course, some of her greatest teachers have been her family, and the many musicians she’s had the privilege to play with along the way.

Most recently, Sousou studied with Ale Möller in his World Music course for professional musicians, an eye- and ear-opening experience with one of Sweden’s most inspiring musical visionaries, that will continue to influence and integrate into her musical work going forward.

Sousou is available for studio work, live collaborations, music for theatre, and interdisciplinary projects. She loves being part of long-term artistic collaborations, especially locally rooted ones, but is also open to one-off projects and remote recording from her own home studio.
